Internship Program DetailsUrbanPromise offers two internships for young adults between the ages of 18-26. Summer InternshipsJune – August Academic Year InternshipsJune – May September – August January – December Summer InternshipThe Summer Internship is an intense eight-week mission during Toronto’s hot summers. Each intern will be assigned a community to work with and become a vital part of a team comprised of UrbanPromise staff, volunteers and community youth. They will be involved in the planning and running of UrbanPromise’s exciting summer day camps for at risk children and youth. These camps are full of recreation activities, bible studies, arts & crafts, music, science and trips. Interns will receive all necessary training, orientation and ministry preparation both before and during these day camps. Interns live together in a house or apartment and learn the experience of community living with people from around the world. Academic Year InternshipThe nine month ‘academic year’ internship program is a more deliberately paced exposure to urban ministry. The schedule is busy, but not as all-consuming as the summer. It allows interns to participate in a larger range of ministry activities and provides a broader education on urban life and culture. The intern's schedule is divided between four broad areas of ministry:
AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMInterns are assigned to serve in one neighborhood for the entire year. They work in an after school program providing homework help, leading small groups in all kinds of activities and investing in the children and their community. Interns play a vital role in creating safe and fun programs where elementary and junior high children are taught to be healthy, responsible and moral individuals. The majority of an intern's time is spent in this area. EDUCATIONEach intern participates in one class per week during the academic year. These discussion-orientated classes focus on issues related to urban communities and ministry. They have relevant readings and assignments, and lots of guest speakers. Each intern is also given time once a week for journal and reflection and to complete assignments. COMMUNITY LIFEInterns live together in a house or apartment and learn the experience of community living. They also participate in weekly group devotions and staff fellowships and periodic all-staff events and retreats. Interns also go on fun, intern-only, weekend retreats at least three times a year. COMMUNITY SERVICEEach intern volunteers a few hours a week in the community, usually at a local school or community center. Program CostsThere is no direct cost associated with the intern program. Summer interns are provided with room and board. Academic year interns receive a small monthly stipend in addition. Interns are expected to help UrbanPromise raise the money necessary to support the program. Interns must identify between 20 to 40 individuals or organizations that might be interested in supporting them in prayer and finances. Interns are responsible for contacting those individuals before they arrive and then writing monthly letters to keep them informed of what is going on in their ministry here. |
