Our team is evidence that it takes many different gifts, talents and experiences to do ministry. The UrbanPromise Toronto staff is a group of regular people who have answered a call to serve as urban missionaries.
Get to know us a little better…
Ruthie has known from a young age that she was called to be a missionary. While she dreamed about a future abroad, God had other plans and brought her to intern with us in the city. Ruthie then joined us at Camp Freedom to work with children fulltime. She loves crafting, running, vegetables and meeting new humans.
Tim has an extensive resume in fundraising and administration in the not for profit sector. He came to our team in 2009 to ‘help with fundraising’ and has since helped revolutionize our administrative systems and structures. Tim keeps us organized, logical, on time and laughing. An avid runner, Tim brought our annual fundraiser- Run for Promise- to life and coaches us as we train during the off-season.
Growing up in Malvern Shawn found himself asking his church, “What are you doing to save kids like me?” When the response was a resounding, “What are you going to do about it, Shawn?” a light bulb turned on and he accepted the challenge. Shawn joined us back in 2001 and has helped lead our team to where we are today. Three of Shawn’s favourite things are his wife, Alison, and their two young children.
Years before joining our team, Chris served at Camp Victory for a week with a group from his church. That’s when God started developing in him a heart for the oppressed. So after he graduated with a BA in History and Psychology, Chris came back fulltime. He loves sharing with others over a meal- preferably the gospel. And chicken wings.
We first met Janelle back in the spring of 2012 when she came to be a Summer Intern at Camp Victory. Seems she just couldn’t leave, so after the summer she stayed for a Full Year Internship, then she did a second year and now she has joined the staff full time. Janelle loves running and enjoying a good cup of coffee, is passionate about helping people experience new things and can't stand inconsistency.
Peter was serving as a student ministries pastor in his hometown of Port Colborne when his life was completely shaken up and moved to the big city. Peter and Lynda started with us in 2004. Peter’s ability to connect with others has helped lead many amazing individuals to our team. He’s passionate about helping dynamic young leaders realize their potential. Peter loves Pepsi, Buffalo wings and the Buffalo Bills.
Christine served as a pastor before joining our team. She had her first glimpse of us while leading her church’s Mission Team in 2001. Eventually Christine’s path led her back to us and to family ministry in 2006. She loves her husband and two kids, reading great biographies and learning to garden.
We've known Ayesha since she was a young girl in our After School Program. She's stuck close to UPT ever since, and decided to join us as full-time staff. Ayesha is passionate about fashion, singing, acting and helping others. She spends her 'spare' time sewing prom dresses, rehearsing with her theater group and laughing constantly.
With a background in social work and a passion for working with families, Stephanie began her missionary journey on the streets of Philadelphia. That’s where she met her husband, Brett, and lucky for us God brought them both here to our team in Toronto. Stephanie loves hanging out with her kids, hiking, reading and having tea with friends.
Julius is well known as “Kuya”, which means “big brother”. This moniker is a solid representation of his role within the community that he both serves and lives in. Julius holds a BA in Religious Studies, and has a strong background in all kinds of sports. He values great fellowship and is well connected both online and off.
Kelly's background as an athlete led her into sports ministry and eventually to us in 2005. Nowadays Kelly is widely known as ‘Mama Kells’ among youth in the Warden Woods community. Kelly has special giftedness in making people laugh, and creating music video spoofs.
